Abstract
Maria è madre di uno dei due suoi figli ed è sposata con il padre di suo figlio. Sua madre venne con lei in Canada quando aveva 14 anni. La sua vita in Italia era bella, mentre invece il suo primo anno in Canada fu difficile per lei. Venne in Canada perché suo zio aveva convinto sua madre del fatto che avrebbero avuto una grande vita qui, come era successo a lui. Quando arrivarono in Canada, non fu come lei se lo
aspettava. La casa non era molto grande e suo zio non aveva tanti soldi quanti lei s’immaginava. Maria aveva molti amici in Italia e quando si trasferì qui non fu la stessa cosa. I coetanei la prendevano in giro per i vestiti che indossava, per come parlava, e per il semplice fatto di non essere di qui. Con il tempo, però, imparò ad affrontare questa situazione.
Maria is the mother of one of her two children and is married to her sons father. Her mother came with her to Canada when she was 14. Her life in Italy was great, while her first year in Canada was difficult for her. The reason why she came to Canada was because her uncle had convinced her mother that he was having a great life here and they would, too. When they came here, it was not what she had expected. The house
was not that big and her uncle did not have as much money as she thought he would. She used to have many friends in Italy and when she came here, she did not. People her age would make fun of her because of the clothes she was wearing, because of the way she spoke and simply because she was not from here. Over time, she learned to deal with this situation.

Questa è la prima casa in cui Maria ha vissuto con la sua famiglia quando sono arrivati in Canada. Ha cresciuto suo figlio in questa casa ed è qui che hanno avuto inizio tutti i
suoi ricordi del Canada. Inoltre, questa è la casa in cui ha imparato l'inglese ed è anche il primo posto in cui ha vissuto con il marito. Maria viveva vicino alla sua famiglia, il che dimostra che avevano un rapporto molto stretto. Questo è stato per lei linizio del periodo di adattamento alla nuova cultura.
This is the first house her family and Maria lived in when they first got to Canada. She raised her son in this house and this is where all of her memories from Canada started.
Furthermore, this is the house she learned English in and the first place in which she lived with her husband. Maria lived across her family, so that shows how close they were. This was the start of her adapting to the new culture. Queste foto sono importanti perché hanno permesso alla famiglia di Maria di includere parte della loro cultura in quella ospitante. Questi oggetti provengono dallItalia e rappresentano una parte della famiglia di Maria. Hanno fatto il caffè alla vecchia maniera, ma hanno detto che vorrebbero iniziare a fare il caffè canadese. These photos are important because they allowed Maria’s family to incorporate part of their culture into the host one. These items are from Italy and represent a part of them.
They made coffee the old fashion way, but they said they would start to make Canadian coffee.
The family as a whole
Nonna Angela è quella che ha avuto più difficoltà ad adattarsi alla cultura, ma ha imparato a gestire tali problemi. L’ostacolo più grosso per lei era che non sapeva parlare inglese e quindi non riusciva a capire certe cose a meno che qualcuno non
gliele spiegasse. Inoltre, non aveva suo marito al suo fianco perché non voleva venire in Canada. Ha cercato di adattarsi facendo amicizia in una classe di lingua inglese. Ha ancora problemi con la lingua, ma ora ama il Canada e dice che in Italia non cè più niente per lei perché la sua famiglia è qui. Suo nipote conosce la cultura italiana e anche quella canadese. Ha iniziato a parlare italiano quando è nato e ha imparato lnglese a 14 anni. Andare in Italia alletà di 9 anni è stato un modo per instillare in lui più cultura italiana. Ha rispettato la sua cultura e i suoi genitori parlando la lingua
italiana a casa, ma anche continuando a cercare di emergere in quella canadese.
Grandma Angela had a harder time adapting to the culture but learned how to deal with it. Her main challenges was that she did not know how to speak English, and therefore
could not understand certain things unless somebody explained them to her. Furthermore, she did not have her husband by her side because he did not want to come to Canada. She tried to adapt by making friends by in an English-speaking class. She still struggles with the language, but now she loves Canada and she says there is nothing left for her in Italy because her immediate family is here. The grandson has learned about the Italian culture as well as the Canadian one. He started speaking Italian when he was born and learned English at 14. Going to Italy at the age of 9 was a way of bringing him closer to the Italian culture. He respected his culture and his parents by speaking the language at home but also by trying to emerge in the Canadian
one.
Questi sono lo zio e la zia di Maria. Da sinistra ci sono Angela, la madre e il papà di Maria. Queste sono le persone che li hanno portati in Canada e li hanno aiutati ad adattarsi alla cultura canadese.
This is Marias uncle and aunt. On the left side of them there are Angela, Marias mother and dad. These were the people that brought them to Canada and helped them adjust to the Canadian culture.
